What it is: Wolfram|Alpha introduces a fundamentally new way to get knowledge and answers— not by searching the web, but by doing dynamic computations based on a vast collection of built-in data, algorithms, and methods.
This is essentially a search engine, but not the usual kind- the kind that brings up hundreds of web pages, any of which may or may not be what you want. WolframAlpha brings up the information itself. For instance, you could type " x + 6 = 9." In Google, you'd get random nonsense. But WolframAlpha doesn't give you any links. The page that comes up has an alternate form of the equation, and the solution to the problem in written form, plotted on a graph, and on a number line. (Click hereto see the exact page.) The website can also give you definitions, and answer questions. I even typed "How hot is the sun?" The site interpreted the request as "Sun temperature" and gave me the right answer! (Click here to view the page for "How hot is the sun?".) I think this is a great idea, a really cool technological accomplishment, and really useful for homework. Two thumbs up!
